District 5 is located in the heart of the City of Miami. The District spans North to South between Little River and Miami River and East to West between Northeast 4th and Northwest 18th Avenue. The historic area can be traced back more than 200 years to Miami’s beginnings in Lemon City. The history and cultural diversity of our neighborhoods shape the originality and uniqueness that make-up District 5.
The City of Miami is the 4th poorest city in the United States. Although a city of many contrasts, our district is home to some of the most economically-depressed neighborhoods while small pockets of wealth and affluence also exists.
More than ever, District 5 needs honest leadership for change. We need a leader who represents its’ diverse population. Someone who will foster job growth, promote small businesses, support youth development programs and facilitate safer neighborhoods.
This is the time for change and ALISON AUSTIN represents that change. Alison Austin is a respected community leader who works to support local families and create access to opportunity.
Vision:
Miami like the rest of the nation is suffering from the economic meltdown and District 5 is no exception. Residents are losing their homes to foreclosures in unprecedented numbers, unemployment is among the highest in the nation and crime and violence is on the rise.
Austin has designed a plan that will address the issues facing the residents of District 5. This plan includes an economic stimulus program that will generate jobs, facilitate additional affordable housing and work collaboratively to address crime and affect safety in the community. Together we can build a District 5 with clean and safe neighborhoods; parks and green spaces; strong schools and after school programs that develop the next generation of leaders.
Integrity:
It is time for District 5 to be represented by someone who will put the people first. District 5 needs a person who will work for the people and not for special interests. District 5 needs someone who will keep their promises. Someone who still believes that “word is bond” and that city leaders need to be held accountable for their actions and responsible for stewardship of public resources.
Alison Austin is an innovator who is offering the residents of District 5 a new voice and a new direction. Austin will push for improved access and accountability in Miami government so we can have a better city for our seniors, families, and children.
Leadership:
Alison’s life experiences have prepared her for leadership. Her ability to overcome that which divides us is an immeasurable personality trait that is a quality greatly needed on the City of Miami Commission. Her dedication and unselfish service to this community and experience in underdeveloped nations has prepared her for public service. The love of a supportive family and her faith gives her the strength she will need to change District 5.
